The main objective of this work is to study some biological aspects of Carcinus aestuarii Northern Sfax (biometry, reproduction, diet), and biochemical contents (water, protein, minerals, and fat). Analysis of metric characteristics of Carcinus aestuarii allowed us to determine the nature of the allometry between the width and différent parts of the body of the crab. For reproduction study, analysis of monthly changes in the gonadosomatic index (GSI) shows that the spawning period of Carcinus aestuarii North Sfax occurs from October to January. The analysis of monthly variations of the hepatosomatic index (HSI), shows that this species used the hepatic reserved to the maturity of gonads. The analysis of monthly variations of the sex-ratio shows that the... |

A review of lipid requirements of shrimp and other crustacean species, when applicable, is presented. Qualitative requirements of crustaceans for cholesterol, fatty acids and phospholipids have been documented, but quantitative requirements generally remain undefined. Potential interrelationships between different classes of lipids that may influence requirements as well as differences due to age and species need to be investigated. A more accurate definition of lipid requirements can be achieved by supporting traditional evaluations based upon weight gain and survival with biochemical or histological evidence. |

A rapid and sensitive method to detect the extracellular enzymatic activity of bacteria colonies grown on agar plates is described. Selective agar media supplemented with protein, starch, chitin, Tween-80, etc. are conventionally used to detect biochemical properties of bacteria. It has been experimentally demonstrated with bacteria pure cultures that fluorogenic Methylumbelliferyl (MUF)-substrates are excellent substrate analogues for normally occurring polymers. Based on MUF-substrate hydrolysis the new method provides reliable qualitative estimates of extracellular enzymatic properties of bacteria within minutes using pure cultures as well as agar plates prepared for colony counts. |

The aim of this study was to evaluate the metabolic profile of the use of soyabean hulls associated with two sources of non-protein nitrogen (NPN) on the finishing of feedlot lambs. Eighty crossbred Suffolk non-castrated lambs aging 69±6 days and weighing 23.11±1.78 kg were used. Lambs were randomly allocated into 4 experimental groups according to the NPN source: conventional urea (1%); protected urea; 1% protected urea + 0.5% conventional urea; and a control group, which did not receive urea supplementation. Blood samples were collected weekly to determine the plasma concentrations of urea, albumine, γ-glutamiltransferase (GGT), calcium and phosphorus. The control group had higher average daily gain and final weight than protected urea and protected urea... |

Changes in metabolite levels in hemolymph and hepatopancreas were used as indicators of physiological status of juvenile wild and cultivated Farfantepenaeas. duorarum (Burkenroad, 1939), during hyper-osmoregulatory conditions (salinity 22 ppt, 726 mOsm/kg). We analyzed the relationship between biochemical changes of wild and cultivated shrimp at different molt stages by measurement of osmotic capacity, hemocyanin, acylglycerides, cholesterol, glucose, glycogen and total protein. Biochemical analyses of hemolymph (blood) and hepatopancreas showed a decreasing trend in stages closer to molt and an increasing trend before intermolt. Osmotic capacity and blood proteins indicated a significant effect of the molt stage. Stages A. D1' and D''' showed the greatest... |
